Downalong Beach Road, St Ives further oil sketch (verso); signed (twice)'Terry Frost' (verso), oil on panel 23.5 x 30.5cm (9 1/4 x 12in).
EXHIBITED: London, The Belgrave Gallery, Autumn Exhibition, 6th to 28th November 1991, no:12
The inscription verso dates this painting to circa 1949 which was an important transition period for the artist's work. Between 1947-1950 Frost was attending Camberwell School of Art but divided his time between London and St Ives. It was under the influence of Victor Pasmore at Camberwell, and the contact with Ben Nicholson and Peter Lanyon in St Ives, that contributed to Frosts move into abstraction. The present lot demonstrates the stylistic change towards abstraction and hints at the purely non-figurative work that Frost would produce from 1950 onwards.
