A clown magician musical illusion automaton, French, circa 1880,
possibly made by Phalibois of Paris, the painted composition headed clown wearing original yellow silk pantaloons and red silk shirt, holds a fan to conceal his head, then lowers the fan to show that his head has disappeared and then it reappears from a dice placed on a side table alongside, with clockwork operated mechanical and musical movements, in glazed display case, the automaton 20in (51cm) high

  • The clown with disappearing head was popular theme for automata makers and a similar example made by Phalibois forms part of the renowned Murtogh D Guinness Collection housed in the Morris Museum, Morristown, N.J., USA.

    The key is stamped 15 and is identical in design to those made by Roullet & Decamps. See p.225, Automata The Golden Age 1848-1914, Christian Bailly.
