Ian Anderson/ Jethro Tull: A letter from Ian Anderson, including a personal account of the formation of Jethro Tull,
1967,
in blue ballpoint on both sides of lined stationery, dated Wed. 20th Dec. and sent from Luton, reading, My Dearest Yvonne, here I am in my lonely little one-room cell on a cold winter's night writing to you. Actually it is not particularly lonely or unpleasant. It is quite a nice little room - very cosy, well stocked with food, cigarettes, personal effects - and money. It is about the first night since I got here that I have had to myself to think things over and take it easy...We arrived here on Sunday 26th Nov. that is, Tony, Glenn and me, and the others drifted down by Wednesday...We did a couple of jobs doing new material with Mick the new guitarist...At this point it became apparent that we could not afford to work as a 7 piece blues band so we decided to pack it in. Glenn and I formed a new group with Mick and his old drummer Clive. Since, we have not looked back. They are both great people and we are very happy together. They are not pro yet but they will be in the near future when work builds up. The others all pushed off back home with the van and I got the place where I am now...We will be quiet over Christmas as we are not the sort of group for Christmas parties...We did the Marquee a week ago and it went quite well - very well in fact considering it was only the second or third time we had played together as a four-piece. I am really enjoying playing again for the first time in ages and every night we work is great. We did a storm in Birmingham last Sunday. A tremendous reception and encore at the end of the performance..., signed All my love (I have no one else to give it to or have had since I last saw you) Ian, and P.P.P.S. I am moving into London in a few weeks so I can ''make the scene'' HO HO..., five sheets, 5¼ x 7 inches (13.5 x 18cm)
