An Italian Violin of the Venetian School circa 1740
Labelled Matteo Goffriller fecit Venetijis anno 1725 Length of back 354mm (13 15/16in) the handsome one piece slabwood back and edges of quality the whole of an aged craquelled red colour on a golden brown ground, much use wear neglect and some restorations. (1)

  • Offered with the Tree- Ring Analysis Report No., B 28 of John Topham dated 9 February 2013 stating inter alia; " As shown in Tables 1 and 2 both sides very significantly cross-match sequences taken from the fronts of many instruments attributed to be Italian and principally from Cremona and Venice. The bass side most significantly cross-matches the bass side sequence from the front of a violin attributed to Guarneri del Gesu dated c.1740. (ISQD4224: t-value of 10.1, overlap of 66 rings).

    Similarly the treble side very significantly cross-matches the bass side of the front of a violin also attributed to Guarneri Del Gesu, dated 1741(ISQD2191: t-value of 13.4 overlap 108 rings). This high value and the graphical similarities (Graph 2) may suggest the pieces came from the same tree.

    Offered with the black and white illustrated Gutachten of E.Tenucci Zurich signed and dated 8 June 1950 stating the above is the work of Matteo Goffriller Venice 1720-1730, also noting Tonqualitaten sind; Brilliant, edel, leichtansprechend, grosse Tragfahigkeit.....
    In addition to a letter relating to the above from Hamma & Co., Stuttgart dated 5 Mai 1939 addressed to Herr Michael Dotch Berlin Wilmersdorf handwritten and signed by Fridolin Hamma, along with copies of same.

Buyers' Premium and Charges

A successful bidder at this sale will be required to pay Bonhams 1793 Limited ("Bonhams") a premium calculated as follows:
25% on the first £100,000 of the hammer price
20% on the excess of £100,001 and up to £2,000,000 of the hammer price
12% on the excess of £2,000,001 of the hammer price

VAT at 20% will be payable on the amount of the premium.
