Footnotes

  • The present work depicts the legend of the Flying Dutchman, a popular sailor's superstition concerning a Dutch sailing ship, cursed to sail the World's Oceans for eternity. First recorded in the late 18th century, it was popularly embellished by various authors in the 19th century, including Sir Walter Scott. Its appearance is usually seen as a portent for evil.
