Footnotes

  • John Cornelius Woolward was the son of William Woolward, a Sea Captain and was the cousin of Frances Nisbet (nee Woolward), Lady Nelson. He served as a Midshipman on HMS Alexander at the Battle of the Nile in 1798, and at Copenhagen in 1801, where his hearing was seriously damaged. He was commissioned Lieutenant in 1802 and secured the post (possibly because of the Nelson connection) as Harbourmaster at Ramsgate, Kent, in 1811, the year he married Elizabeth Dewshap at Greenwich. He was promoted Commander on his retirement from the Navy in 1832 but remained in post as Harbourmaster until his death in 1836. He is buried in St Lawrence Churchyard at Ramsgate.
