Footnotes

  • Robert Whittle was born Whalley, Lancashire on the 28th March 1829. From the 28th April 1847 he was an Ensign with the 91st Foot and during this period he served at the Cape under Sir Harry Smith at the attack and defeat of the Boers on 29th August 1848. Whittle was promoted to Lieutenant on 20th April 1849 and held that position until his retirement in 1852. After his retirement he joined the Militia, and from 19th November 1852 he was a Captain with the Royal Lancashire Militia. While a Captain in the Militia, he served in Ionian Islands between 1855 and 1856 and also volunteered with his Company, "the Grenadiers" to serve in the Crimea, though was never dispatched due to the fall of Sebastopol. In 1863 he came an Instructor of Musketry, and then was finally promoted to Major on the 17th February 1868, retiring from the Militia on 9th May 1874. Whittle ultimately became a Lieutenant Colonel in the 10th Lancashire Rifle Volunteers.
