A Restauration mahogany console table
the rectangular marble top above a plain frieze, on two stiff-leaf clasped and honeysuckle carved corbel scrolled front supports terminating in lion paw feet, with pilaster back supports, on a plinth base, 122.5cm wide x 46.5cm deep x 92.5cm high, (48" wide x 18" deep x 36" high)

Footnotes

  • A similar mahogany console table to the present lot, circa 1820, which is stamped: 'L. BELLANGE', was executed by Louis-Francois Bellangé (1759-1827) who flourished as a cabinet maker during the Empire and Restauration periods in Paris (Clark Graves Antiques, St. Louis, U.S.A). This example in its own turn bears comparison with another Bellangé piece, which has typical Charles X amaranth inlay, illustrated in Denise Ledoux-Lebard, "Le Mobilier Francais du XIX Siecle", 1989, p.64.

Another similar console to the offered lot, circa 1835, which is stamped: 'JACOB' and 'L.P.O.', was supplied by the renowned Parisian cabinet maker, Georges-Alphonse Jacob-Desmalter (1799-1870) for Louis Philippe d'Orleans (Richard Redding Antiques Ltd., Gündisau, Switzerland).

However, the above example has refined stiff-leaf carved terminals instead of the carved lotus-leaves surmounting the scroll supports on the aforementioned consoles. Another distinction of the above lot, aside from its different stepped plinth base from the others, are the rather fine honeysuckles carved immediately below the volutes.
