A George IV rosewood card table
attributed to Gillows
the swivel hinged top with an egg moulded edge, enclosing an oval baize lined playing surface, above a bead-and-reel moulded frieze drawer, on two lotus-leaf clasped and fluted columnar end supports, terminating in outswept legs with palmette carved scroll feet and castors, 66.5cm wide, 41.5cm deep, 76cm high (26" wide, 16" deep, 29.5" high).

  • A George IV mahogany tray top work table stamped 'GILLOWS.LANCASTER', with similar elements to the offered lot, sold Christie's, King Street, 23 November 2006, lot 121. Among their shared characteristics are the bead-and-reel moulding along the edge of the frieze drawer, the lotus-leaf clasped and fluted columnar end supports, and the carved outswept legs. The same tray top table, which was made for the Lancaster firm's Oxford Street partners Ferguson & Co on 28 January 1826, is illustrated in S. Stuart, "Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol II", plate GG36, p.382.

    A rosewood writing table with a similar base to the present lot, ordered by Ferguson & Co for Reverend Fane in June 1825, appearing among the Gillow designs housed in the Westminster Archive Centre, also features in S. Stuart, "Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Vol I", plate 274, p. 268.
