The shaped and bevelled triptych folding dressing mirror on fluted and cross banded supports, flanked either side by two shaped and sloping tambour pedestal cabinets, the top opening to reveal a bevelled mirror back with hinged fitted trays, opening inward to reveal further fitted and removable compartments and folding glass slides, the fitted trays containing a number of silver hallmarked, bone and cut glass articles to include, two brushes, nail buffer, assorted vanity tools and eleven glass and sliver topped bottles of various sizes all bearing the hallmarks for G. Betjemann & Sons, London, 1913, above two panelled doors, the left hand side containing an arrangement of three graduating short drawers, the right enclosing a fitted and working safe manufactured by Milners and Company, London and Liverpool on waisted plinth feet, 149cm wide, 40cm deep, 192cm high (58.5" wide, 15.5" deep, 75.5" high).

  • George Betjemann (1798-1886) was the great grandfather of the Poet Laureate Sir John Betjeman (1906-1984). George Betjemann was apprenticed to the dressing case maker Gilbert Slater in 1810 and established himself as a dressing case manufacturer, initially in Clerkenwell and later in the Pentonville Road, where they eventually employed 119 people

    The above lot is a variant sharing some similar features of the portable dressing tables for which the firm is better known. A fine example of the travelling form of dressing table in satinwood with silver-gilt fittings was sold Bonhams, London 24 June 2009, lot 143. Two examples of this stylish dressing table, one in mahogany and one in satinwood, with varying fittings, have appeared at auction as part of the collections of suitably glamorous vendors such as Maria Felix and S.A.R La Principessareale Maria Gabriella Di Savoia.
