Footnotes

  • Related Secrétaires à abbatant by S. Jamar are illustrated in Christopher Gilbert, Pictorial Dictionary of Marked London Furniture, 1996, pp. 274-279.

The strong Empire style pervading Jamar's recorded furniture indicates that he recieved his training on the Continent. He was trading from premises at 29 Wardour Street by 1818, together with a relative William Jamar where he advertised furniture in the French manner 'equal to any made in Paris and at a rate that upon calculation will be admitted considerably advantageous than importing from abroad...' The following year Jamar moved to 73 Gerrard Street, Soho (remaining their until 1826), and also opened another showroom in Liverpool.
