Footnotes

  • A very similar design, described as a 'Dressing chest and Bookcase', features in Thomas Chippendale's "The Gentleman & Cabinet-Maker's Director", dated 1753, plate CXIV. The overall form of the present lot is virtually identical to Chippendale's drawing. Particularly striking features include; the pierced quatrefoil centred foliate carved pediment/cresting; the Chinese fretwork spandrels and intricately carved and interlaced C-scroll, rocaille and acanthus leaf applied elements; along with the elaborate Rococo bracket feet. However, the gothic blind fretwork frieze in Chippendale's drawing is not paralleled on the cabinet here.
