Footnotes

  • The marquetry on the present lot is very similar to the inlaid work of Charles-Guillaume Diehl. Working as an ebéniste from circa 1840 - 1885, Diehl was born in 1811 in the grand duchy of Hesse and moved to Paris where he traded at the rue Michel-Le-Comte from 1853 to 1885. Diehl produced works in a great variety of styles, though predominantly in the 18th century manner, and he exhibited some of his finest pieces at the major international exhibitions of the day, including the 1851 Great Exhibition.
