Footnotes

  • The fine marquetry and intricate ormolu mounts of the present lot are recurrent features of the work of the German born, Joseph-Emanuel Zwiener (born 1848). Zwiener, who flourished during the last quarter of the 19th century, rapidly gained a reputation for producing elegant pieces which re-invigorated, and often exuberantly re-interpreted, the fashionable Louis XV style.

Zwiener, working in Paris at 12 rue de la Roquette between 1880 and 1895, appears to have reached the zenith of his impressive career when he was awarded a gold medal for his stand at the 1889 Paris exhibition.
