Footnotes

  • This collection of 19th century pans comes from the famous Gentleman's club, Boodles. Boodles was established in Pall Mall by Lord Shelburne in 1762 and named after the head waiter, Edward Boodle. Lord Shelburne became Marquess of Lansdowne and later Prime Minister, and set up the club as a meeting point for Tories to network, discuss politics and relax over dinner and the gaming tables. The club became well known for its traditional English style, serving old fashioned meals to members who were required to dress formally for dinner or face being sent to the 'Dirty Room' to eat. To this day it is dedicated to preserving the traditional ideals of the English gentleman's club. The club is still based at 28 St James Street, where is has been since re-locating in 1782. It is the second oldest Gentleman's club in the world and counted Beau Brummell, Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming as members.
