Footnotes

  • The minimalist scheme of inlay on the present table with its combination of contrasting panels of veneer to the legs and distinctive central medallions has affinities with that on a commode attributed to Mayhew and Ince, sold Christie's London, '50 Years of Collecting: The Decorative Arts of Georgian England', 14 May 2003, lot 20. In addition to this the repertoire of ornament features a running anthemion border to the top and pelter motif to the front which are commonly occurring motifs exhibited on furniture associated with the work of this firm (see Lucy Wood, Catalogue of Commodes, 1994, pp. 203-208).
