Footnotes

  • The marquetry pattern for the cupboard doors on the commode offered here is directly based on that found on Thomas Chippendale's celebrated library table supplied circa 1771 to Edwin Lascelles (1713-1795) for Harewood House, Yorkshire. The Harewood Library table is known to have been produced in replica at least twice in the early 20th century, very probably by the firm of Gillows. Christopher Gilbert illustrates one example thought to date from circa 1910 (formerly with Mallett Ltd) in The Life and Work of Thomas Chippendale London, 1978, pl.444, p.243. The Harewood library table was sold at Christie's London, 1 June 1965 achieving £43,050, a world record price for English furniture, a record still held in 1978 when Gilbert's Chippendale book was published. Gilbert records that at the time of publication in 1978 one of the early 20th century replica tables had notably just changed hands for £18,000 illustrating the high regard in which this model was held.
