An Irish rococo style carved mahogany clothes chest
based on a design by Thomas Chippendale
The rectangular hinged top with a shell lunette and paterae carved moulded edge, the front panel with a carved rocaille cartouche, composed of floral swags, C-scrolls and acanthus foliage, flanked by narrow panels of pendant flowers suspended from ring motifs, the sides with conforming carved ornament and a pair of brass carrying handles, the moulded slightly outset base with a border of overlapping leaves above a diaper trellis blind fret-carved frieze with a shaped rocaille apron, on square feet pierced with quatrefoils headed by square paterae and with rockwork plinths, 19th century, possibly incorporating earlier elements, 134cm wide, 59cm deep, 90cm high (52.5" wide, 23" deep, 35" high).

  • The carving to the front panel is very similar to one of 'Two Designs of Clothes Chest' illustrated in the 3rd Edition of Thomas Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker's Director, 1763, pl. CXXVIII.
