Footnotes

  • This form of kidney shaped desk is one of Gillow's best known models from the mid 19th century although writing furniture of this pattern was produced by other firms such as Hindley and Holland & Sons. The design relates to an entry in the Gillow Estimate Sketch book (1840) for An Oak Pedestal and Kidney Table supplied to Ferguson & Co. The model is derived from a design published by Thomas Sheraton in his The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Drawing Book, London 1802, pl.58, Gillow produced these desks for several decades in the middle of the 19th century.

John Barrow was the son W.J Barrow, the Liverpool cabinet-maker whose name appears in the Gillow records between 1800-1840.John Barrow was apprenticed to Leonard Redmayne in 1826 and appears in the Gillow records between 1834 and 1848.
