Footnotes

  • A related goncalo alves armchair attributed to Gillows with the same apron pattern was sold Bonhams London, 26 November 2001, lot 189. The armchair previously sold at Bonhams has the naturalistically carved eagle's claw foot seen on furniture from several known Gillow commissions; notably a pair of card tables from Hermeston Hall sold at Bonhams London, 16 July 2008, lot 134. The distinctive eagle's claw foot appears on other well known pieces attributed to Gillows, most notably the suite of rosewood furnishings from Nidd Hall, Ripley, Harrogate, formerly the home of Viscount Mountgarret and sold Christie's London, 9 July 1987, (lots 60-67).
