A George IV mahogany double chest by William Barrow for Gillows
The rounded rectangular top above two banks of six drawers with Gonçalo Alves turned handles and original lining paper, the locking pilasters with sliding panels concealing the keyholes, on a rounded rectangular moulded plinth, the top left drawer stamped Gillows and with the pencil inscription W. Barrow to the underside, 122cm wide, 58cm deep, 92cm high (48" wide, 22.5" deep, 36" high).

Footnotes

  • William Barrow, snr was apprenticed to Isaac Greenwood of Lancaster in 1780. He may have been the William Barrow who became a Lancaster freeman 1799-1800 and who worked for Gillows in 1800. He is named on the Gillow payroll in 1835, his son also William, was apprenticed to Redmayne in 1829 and became a freeman in 1837 (see S.Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London 1730-1840, Vol II, p.215.
