Footnotes

  • "The lengthening and foreshortening of the lines of red London buses in motion (and similarly of the buildings' melancholy curves) creates a mysterious sensation of time accelerating and then slowing down again. This may give the viewer a distilled sense of the irregular movement as well as all the stops and starts of a travelling bus, but it also suggests the fluidity of life itself, beyond all conventional concepts of time and space."

Philip Vann, Cyril Power Linocuts: A Complete Catalogue (Farnham: Lund Humphries, 2008),16.

    Provenance:
Peggy Owen was the daughter of Will Owen who was a prolific illustrator in the 1920s. He also designed posters for the Underground Group in 1926.
