Footnotes

  • The single colour lino block for this work was originally conceived as one of five full-page illustrations for Beaumont's publication 'Art From Linoleum' (Library Press, Sheffield. 1932) inspired by Claude Flight's 1927 manual 'Lino-cuts: A Hand-book of Linoleum-cut Colour Printing' (John Lane, the Bodley Head, London. 1927). After the book was published, Beaumont produced a few copies which were exhibited in their own right.

This work was originally titled '1926' in reference to the nine day General Strike in May 1926. The strike was called by the general council of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) in an unsuccessful attempt to force the British Government to act to prevent wage reduction and worsening conditions for 800,000 locked-out coal miners. Some 1.7 million workers went out on strike and marches and rallies occurred across the country.
