Footnotes

  • During the First World War Beaumont served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves and was posted to the East Indies. Some of his earliest linocuts dating between 1930-33 have strong nautical themes and are based on his recollections whilst serving in the British Royal Navy. 'Leave' was an attempt to capture the grace and movement of two sailors walking and was particularly inspired by the work Cyril Power had exhibited at the Redfern Gallery the previous year.
