• Born in Granada, Spain in 1898 and educated at the city's Academy of Fine Arts, it was a visit to an exhibition of French Impressionist art in Madrid in 1917 which inspired Ismael de la Serna to forget his formal training and experiment with artistic styles. It was not long before he felt stifled by the lack of innovation in the Spanish art scene, and a move to the creative hothouse of Paris in 1921 led to meetings with Picasso, who apparently declared de la Serna "as grand as Juan Gris". From that moment on his career flourished, his most notable successes including sell-out shows across Europe and his work being purchased in the 1930s by the National Gallery of Berlin and the Mannheim Museum. The Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris ultimately granted de la Serna the honor of a posthumous one-man restrospective in 1974, six years after the artist's death in the French capital.
