[The Byble, Whych is All the Holy Scripture: in Whych are Contayned the Olde and Newe Testament, truelye and purely translated into Englishe by Thomas Matthewe], 2 vol., 624 leaves (of 706, first volume begins 'Unto the Reader'), 54 lines, black letter, double column, in addition, 88 manuscript leaves (completing The Epistle to the Romayns, ending with The Revelation), New Testament title within wide historiated border, front free endpapers detached (vol. one), several leaves with short tears, (first page of The Psalmes of David torn at fore-margin with loss), armorial bookplate, catalogue cutting pasted in, contemporary calf over wooden boards, worn, hinges loose [Herbert 75; STC 2078], folio (300 x 190mm.), [Thomas Raynalde and William Hyll, 1549]

  • "Thomas Matthew is commonly treated as a pseudonym of John Rogers... But as Rogers only edited what is essentially Tyndale's translation, it seems more probable that Matthew stands for Tyndale's own name, which was then dangerous to employ" (Herbert).
