WALES
Album of views in South Wales (12, mostly Southerdown, near Bridgend), Bruges and Ghent (8), and Heidelberg Castle (4), lightly albumised prints (approximately 80 x 220mm.), mounted one per page recto only, each captioned and dated (June-September, 1855) beneath the image; together with approximately 22 other smaller albumen prints (views of Torquay and Devonshire towns, family groups, one identified as "Gorath family"), half morocco, rubbed, oblong folio, [1855]

Footnotes

  • Taken by an unidentified (?Welsh) photographer in 1855, the images include an unusual series of studies on Southerdown beach near Bridgend, South Wales. Three are rock studies, and two include posed figures. One captioned "Narcissus" (with light pencil addition "very beery. Miss Tyler" in pencil) depicts a single man leaning against the cliff edge looking into a sand pool; the other "Casting Reflections" has two men nonchalantly posed in similar location. Other Welsh views include Kidwelly Castle, a boat on a beach, Ogmore Castle, Slade Cottage. The images of Bruges, Ghent, and Heidleberg concentrate on architectural motifs and views.
