Footnotes

  • An archive of pen, ink and watercolour illustrations representing a snapshot of the taste and styles of children's and gift-book decoration of the Edwardian period. They are the work of Leslie F. Everett (of Willesden Green, London), of whom we have found no trace but is an accomplished artist, perhaps a student or amateur pitching for work. A major influence is Arthur Rackham, including a series of 8 pen and watercolours (mostly fairy tale subjects - Goblin Gold; Calamity; Scandal). Subjects include goblins, pirates, classic tales such as Lohengrin and Goldsmith's Vicar of Wakefield, a poster for G.N.R. travel of Scarborough, two bold caricature gentlemen of the East in the style of John Hassall, a pastiche of the C. Roberson & Co. Ltd arts materials advertisement, a Dumbledore-esque Wizard with crystal ball influenced by Dulac, mock-ups for a book entitled "Pan-Demon-um. Tales of the Lost Garden Told by L.F. Everett".
