Footnotes

  • The photographs comprise: "Their Royal Highnesses Prince Edward and Prince George of Wales;" "The Right Honourable Vice-Admiral Earl Clanwilliam;" "Distant View of Government House from the Botanic Gardens;" "His Excellency Sir Arthur Kennedy, Governor of Queensland;" "The Governor's Family and his Guests under the 'Traveller's Tree;'" "The Houses of Parliament from the Botanic Gardens;" "Another Group at Government House;" "A Vista in the Botanic Gardens, with the Houses of Parliament;" "His Serene Highness Prince Louis of Battenberg;" "A Muster of the Squadron - 'Jolly Tars' and 'Hearts of Steel'".

The first Baron Amherst of Hackney (1835-1909), to whom the present volume is inscribed, was a noted collector of books and Egyptian artefacts, and his museum at Didlington Hall, Norfolk, was one of the finest private collections. Amherst facilitated the career of Howard Carter and went on to publish on Egyptian, Coptic and Greek papyri. His own holding of papyri was acquired by the Pierpont Morgan Library.

Describing the Princes on active service, the prefatory note by Lawrence J. Byrne topically notes that they "shall be directed beyond the currents of idleness and frivolity, and assured in a well-grounded knowledge of countries and peoples and of the practical duties of life."
