A late 19th century micro-mosaic cross pendant
The Chi Rho cross motif decorated with inset micro-mosaic channels of floral and foliate sprays, to beaded terminals and ropetwist borders, centred with an oval panel depicting a dove amongst flowers, below a ropetwist decorated pendant bale, length 6.7cm.

Footnotes

  • The Chi Rho cross is probably the oldest symbol used to denote the name of Christ, and has been found inscribed to the walls of Roman catacombs and in the cemeteries of early Christians. Chi and Rho are the first two letters in the Greek word for Christ and, when overlayed, produce the 'XP' of the Chi Rho symbol.
