Footnotes

  • Contrary to the information inscribed to the reverse of 'Mrs Rigby's Picture', Catherine Noel was a daughter of Baptist Noel, 3rd Viscount Campden and his fourth wife, Lady Elizabeth Bertie (d.1683). John Manners, 1st Duke of Rutland was not Catherine's grandfather but her husband. The couple married in c.1673-74 and divorced in 1688. They had three children, Lady Catherine Manners (1675-1722), John Manners, 2nd Duke of Rutland (1676-1721) and Lady Dorothy Manners (1681-1734), who married Baptist Noel, 3rd Earl of Gainsborough (1684-1714), Catherine's nephew.

Mrs Rigby (1746-1827) was the widow of Rev. Henry Rigby and a daughter of Dr. Robert Prower (d.1795).
