Antiquarian papers of Albert Hartshorne and of his father, Charles Henry Hartshorne, comprising (i) two exercise-books of architectural notes and drawings kept by Charles Henry Hartshorne, the first devoted to "Military Architecture of the Norman Period. Orford Castle and Castle Hedingham", the second to floor-plans of Goodrich Castle, his ownership inscription dated 1847, both illustrated in coloured washes; (ii) a large quarto volume of drawings by Albert Hartshorne, containing a sequence of about sixty studies mostly drawn in 1863 and 1864 of sepulchral effigies in pen-and-ink, pencil and wash, loosely-mounted in the order in which they were drawn, the first half of the sequence consisting of meticulously-finished studies, some with tracing-paper overlays made for publication, each inscribed with details of the tomb figure itself and of when the drawing was made (some with additional notes pencilled in the margin, such as: "These Effigies seem to be by the same school of sculptors who carved the figures on the West front of Wells"), the second half of the sequence consisting of sketches, mostly in pen-and-ink or pencil, but without final captions; the sequence beginning with a finished pencil ink and wash study captioned "Thomas de Beckingham. Bishop of Bath and Wells ob. 1464 Feby 1863/ Scale one eighth"; the main sequence of studies made at Shepton Mallet, Nunney, Chewton Mendip, Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Whittington and Leckhampton and Dorchester, with further drawings made in Essex, at Earls Colne, Layer Marney and Elmstead; plus studies at Westminster Abbey, in Middlesex, Hillington [Hillingdon] and Harefield, and at Hereford Cathedral (the latter dated 1877); (iii) an octavo notebook of working antiquarian and architectural studies by Albert Hartshorne, comprising a medley of nearly forty drawings in pen-and-ink and pencil, of Hannington Church, Northants, 1863 and Walgrave, in Westminster Abbey, Canons Ashby, 1864, domestic architecture in Pinner, St Alban's Cathedral (prior to Lord Grimthorpe's depredations), armour (including a "Headpiece of a german suit sold at Sotheby's for 80gs March 1865"), etc; (iv) plus a group of off-prints, proofs etc of plates and monographs by Albert Hartshorne, including his Sword Belts of the Middle Ages
