Footnotes

  • Advance proof copy of the English edition, sent to Eric Hiscock at the Evening Standard in the hope of its being reviewed by Howard Spring. Such was the influence of his reviews, Chatto and Windus suggest in the letter (dated 28 March 1938) that they would even be prepared to bring forward the British publication date: "I know that Mr. Spring is one of the most discerning of those who review Faulkner, and just on the off chance that he might like to make this new book his choice, I send you complete proofs herewith. The publishing date is May 5th, unless a choice alters our plans".
