Footnotes

  • "When from the lofty Castle I espie, The ragged rocks, which round about it lye". Mount-Ogrueil was written entirely in verse whilst Prynne was exiled to Jersey following his trial for sedition in 1637, and is dedicated to the prison's governor Philip Carteret. Released in 1640, Prynne notes on the errata leaf that he wishes to correct "presse errors, which have escaped in some coppies in my absence".
