A Derby shell pickle stand, circa 1760
Of elaborate form with a tier of three deep scallop shells, the interiors painted in blue with flower sprays, scattered sprigs and insects framed by cell borders, a raised central column supporting a further scallop shell dish painted with a Japanese style bird on a banded hedge design, this dish unusually modelled inside with a tiny pickle or gherkin picked out in blue, the stem and base applied with a profusion of modelled shells among an openwork arrangement of seaweed, all heightened in blue, 22.5cm high
