Ptolemaic Period, circa 305-30 B.C.
With blue and gilt striped tripartite wig, the gilt face outlined in red, the eyes with white sclera and black irises, with pronounced cosmetic lines and eyebrows in black, 13½in (34cm) high, mounted

    UK private collection, acquired in the 1960s.

    Gilded masks were inspired by the traditional Pharaonic belief that the mask served as a replacement for the head of the deceased, so aiding his or her passage to the afterlife, cf. S. Walker and M. Bierbrier, Ancient Faces, London, 1997, p.77.
