Hellenistic Period, circa 3rd-2nd Century B.C.
Life-sized, depicting a youthful goddess, possibly Aphrodite or Artemis, the oval face with sensitively modelled features, with slightly parted full lips, almond-shaped eyes with heavy lids, and small delicate ears, the long wavy hair tied in a top-knot in the lampadion style, 10½in (26.5cm) high, mounted

    Literature:
    The oval face with delicate features and the soft rendition of the hair are typical features of the style which was popular during the Hellenistic period. A similar head of a goddess found at the Temple of Demeter in Knidos, Turkey, is now part of the British Museum's collection, inventory no. 1859, 1226.90.
