Footnotes

  • Provenance:
With Fortuna Fine Arts, New York, Ancient Coins, 2008, item 87.
New York private collection, acquired in 1979.

    Literature:
Cf., J Spier, Treasures of the Ferrell Collection, Wiesbaden 2010, p. 309, no. 41. This lot is cited in the footnote to no. 41. The coin is a semissis, a rarer denomination than the solidus and the semis (see: Roman Imperial Coinage, vol. VII, p.477, no. 66; Depeyrot 10/5 variety). This ring is immediately contemporary with the coin, and it is possible that it may have been a Donativum (gift of the emperor to a high-ranking military-man).
