Footnotes

  • This portrait relates to one by Aikman in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. Aikman is known to have painted Campbell on at least fourteen occasions.

    John Campbell was a noted Unionist and accomplished soldier, who commanded the government forces in the defeat of the Earl of Mar's Jacobites at Sheriffmuir. In recognition of this he was awarded the Dukedom of Greenwich.
