Footnotes

  • The Hunt Button Collection of the late Mr Neil McShane

Neil McShane was a first class horseman, Point-to-Point racing was his first love, winning far and wide with a horse called Adagio. He won the Four Mile Open Race at Marks Tey (the East Anglian 'Grand National') on three occasions out of four in the late Sixties. He commentated for the Point-to-Points of his local pack The Essex & Suffolk along with others. He was an avid huntsman and hunted with 5 packs in Britain and Ireland. This love of hunting lead to him building this leading collection of Hunt Buttons which he used for the basis of his research for his two editions of his book on the subject, the latter which was published posthumously in 2013 entitled 'Hunt Buttons, The Buttons of the hunts of England, Ireland, Scotland & Wales', it is printed as a limited edition of 100 copies. The forthcoming 5 lots comprise his collection of Foxhounds to Minkhounds in Britain and Ireland, with examples of foreign and military buttons. Reference in cataloguing was taken from his book.
