The earlier Glasgow figure studies are more naturalistic depictions of children than the later pastels on sparkling glass paper, where Joan Eardley balances close observation with simplified form. They are painterly, and fluid, rendered tonally and still betraying her admiration for Van Gogh. This appears to depict Andrew Samson, one of her favourite models.
