London, Portland Gallery, Peploe, Nov. 2012, cat.no.16

This monumental still life, painted on his larger format circa 1917, is one of the last Peploe executed in homage to Paul Cezanne. The motif of the apples, the solidity of the objects and rich, tonal palette recall the French master, while remaining characteristically mid-period Peploe. His palette would lighten considerably post 1920, becoming chalky, and his work generally more decorative.
