Peploe had visited the pretty resort of Cassis, east of Marseille, in 1911, and again in 1913 in the company of Fergusson. This oil perfectly captures the sun-bleached, shimmering street and cool shadows, using outlined interlocking planes of colour under an unmodulated blue sky. The geometrical format, broken by touches of foliage, and visual tension of orange against its opposite colour (blue) is particularly modern in outlook.
