The beautiful Jardins du Luxembourg in Paris were a favourite sketching ground of Peploe, in easy walking distance of his lodgings in Montparnasse. Although there are remarkable similarities in the work of Peploe and Fergusson 1910-12, when they were working side by side in Royan and in close contact in Paris, this is very much a characteristic Peploe. Form is stylised and simplified and compositions are infused with pure colour, sometimes applied alla prima. The vigorous, light brushwork is conspicuous and confirms Peploe as in the vanguard of British Modernism.
