Footnotes

  • PROVENANCE:
Sale; Bonhams, Edinburgh, August 24, 2002, lot 1011
With Ewan Mundy Fine Art, Glasgow

There are three extant versions of this composition (one in the collection of the University of Glasgow; another larger view offered at Christie's, Dec. 12, 2012), of which this may be considered the most successful. The colour and tone are lighter, more vibrant, and the foreground is more striking, with the unique added decorative component of the still life. This is a succinct, arresting design with strong geometry and it is no surprise that Cadell's views of Cassis were well-received at the time.

He first visited the little port, east of Marseille, in 1923 and stayed at the Hotel Panorama. Cadell was so taken with the place he returned again with Peploe the following summer, the year of the first exhibition by all four Colourists at the Galeries Barbazanges in Paris.
