PROVENANCE: The JD Fergusson Art Foundation Collection, cat.no.42 as 'Back Street, Royan 1910' With Ewan Mundy Fine Art, Glasgow With The Scottish Gallery, Edinburgh, 2000
EXHIBITED: London, Gallery 27, The Scottish Colourists, 5-17 June 2000
This picture bears close comparison with another in the Fergusson Museum Collection, Perth (K. Simister, Living Paint, JD Fergusson 1874-1961, Edinburgh, 2001, cat.no.39, p.141). It would appear to show a view from his studio window, before he moved to Rue Notre Dame des Champs in mid-1908. The bold use of pure colour and structure of abstracted planes make this a radical picture for the date, highlighting Fergusson's easy absorption of Modernism via the Fauves at the Salons. It anticipates the Royan series of 1910.
