The series of pictures Peploe painted at Paris Plage represent his most ambitious statements to date. Sketched en plein air, they capture the sparkling light effects, movement and atmosphere of the elegant resort. The paint surface reveals grains of sand blown on while the artist applied the paint, which is dynamic and fluid. The creamy, pale palette of the period is now punctuated with pure colour and the whole reveals Peploe's easy assimilation of Modernism.
