Footnotes

  • EXHIBITED:
    Edinburgh, Royal Scottish Academy, 1899, cat.no.601 (£250)

    LITERATURE:
AE Mackay, Arthur Melville, Scottish Impressionist, Leigh on Sea, 1951, pp.109, 139

Melville returned to Spain in the spring of 1899, just before his marriage, at the peak of his talents as an exhibiting artist. He executed a number of larger-format works on the theme of the bullfight as a spectacle, such as The Little Bullfight, Bravo Toro (V&A, London) drawn in Madrid. Many of these are illustrated in Mackay's book, and constitute some of his finest later works. This subject gave full reign to his ability to capture light, movement and action, and in this example we see the crowd waiting at the gate for entry to the bullring. Melville's compositions were progressive and ambitious and, for him, the areas of 'space' were as important as the applied colour. Often asymmetrical, this creates a visual tension, reflecting how the crowd would have felt in expectation of witnessing Spain's most celebrated cultural tradition.
