Mrs McTaggart, née Mary Holmes, died of illness in December of 1884, following the death of McTaggart's mother in November. Caw writes (p.90) 'her sympathetic and serene nature, forming a perfect foil to his ardent and eager spirit, with its inclination to impetuosity, had secured for him, amid the trials and misunderstandings seemingly inseparable from the career of a real creative artist, a home atmosphere peculiarly well suited for his development both as an artist and a man.'
