  • A form of this work was published as 'A Genealogical History of the Earldom of Sutherland', published by Constable in 1813

    The Advertisement to the introduction suggests 'The manuscript, from which this work is printed, is in the possession of the Marchioness of Stafford. A similar one is to be found in the Advocates' Library at Edinburgh. These with two others, are all that are known to exist of the History, the author of which was Sir Robert Gordon'. Three works of this title dated 1620-1658, and other Gordon papers are confirmed in the Advocates Manuscripts [Adv.MS.34.3.3]

    Sir Robert Gordon a younger son of the Family of Sutherland was born in 1580 he spent the greater part of his life in the courts of James and Charles the First and was the ancestor of the Family of Gordonstone to whom he bequeathed a large estate in the county of Elgin
